The mission of the GBMES is to promote bonding between BME graduate students, to provide academic and student-life resources to its members, and to build a positive relationship between students, faculty, and industry. GBMES strives to be both a social and a professional liaison for its members. It sponsors social activities throughout the year including new student orientation events, monthly happy hours, bowling nights, and holiday parties. As a professional liaison, GBMES strives to initiate changes within the BME Department by translating graduate student opinion into actions.
GSA is the student governmental body representing all Carnegie Mellon graduate students. As the custodian of graduate students' activities fees, GSA oversees recognition and funding of student organizations, funds programs that benefit graduate students, and sponsors social events for all graduate students. GSA is also an advocate for graduate students at the campus, city, state, and federal levels. GSA's mission is to improve upon the academic support and collegial activities for graduate students.
The mission of SWE is to stimulate women to achieve full potential in careers as engineers and leaders, to expand the image of the engineering profession as a positive force in improving the quality of life, and to demonstrate the value of diversity. The chapter at CMU provides support network to students pursuing a degree in engineering, encouraging aspiration, advancement, and achievement through various social and professional events that benefit students, the university, as well as the community.
The NSBE mission is to increase the number of culturally responsible black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively affect the community. The Carnegie Mellon chapter of NSBE participates in activities such as tutorial programs, group study sessions, high school/junior high outreach programs, technical seminars, and workshops in addition to taking advantage of all the resources and opportunities afforded by the national organization.
The Carnegie Mellon chapter of SHPE strives to increase the number of Hispanic engineering and science students at Carnegie Mellon through the development of programs with industry and the university. These activities are designed to increase career awareness, encourage relationships with professionals, develop leadership skills, and promote academic excellence.
