Summer Internship Program
Upon completing their sophomore or junior years, BME majors are encouraged to spend a summer applying their skills doing research in Pittsburgh area hospitals, medical schools, research laboratories, or industries. The positions require the student to work for a total of 10 weeks. The internship covers a wide range of research topics including:
- computational biomechanics and medical devices
- biosensing and biomicroelectromechanical systems (BioMEMS)
- bioprocessing
- tissue engineering/biomaterials
- medical image/signal processing
- medical robotics/assisted living.
Benefits: Summer research experiences help students make confident post-graduation decisions. Since the inception of the summer undergraduate research program in 1980, hundreds of BME students have participated in this unique experience and about fifty percent of them decided to advance their education in a medical school or graduate school.
Eligibility: Summer Internships are ONLY for Carnegie Mellon University students completing their sophomore or junior year as a major in Biomedical Engineering, with the priority given to sophomores.
Applications: Students interested in the summer internship should submit a current resume to Ms. Hilda Diamond, Director of Placement and Alumni Relations for BME, Doherty Hall 2100, in January for the internship during the following summer. Email inquiries may be sent to hd01 at andrew.cmu.edu.
Matching Procedure: The applicants may specify any number of potential positions from a list of employers. After matching the interests of the students with those of the employers, the Department will notify the student to contact the employer(s) for an interview. Once committed to a position, the student is not allowed to switch to a different employer.
