Advising
Advising undergraduate students is an important function of the BME Department. Due to the additional major, nagivating through the BME requirements is different from that for other majors. BME faculty advisors are dedicated to helping students plan their academics. Students are strongly encouraged to maintain regular communications with advisors in both departments involved in their education.
BME uses a two-tier advising system - students switch advisors after they select a track. Many students will start their track courses in the junior Fall, while some will start in the junior spring. Therefore, students should start considering the track choice as soon as they declare the BME major in the freshman year, and should make a decision on the track during pre-registration in the spring semester of the sophomore year. Track decision should be submitted by email to the Associate Head Prof. Conrad Zapanta.
Students taking the SBME track should submit the proposal to the BME Associate Head Prof. Zapanta at least three weeks prior to pre-registration during the Sophomore spring semester.
Course Planning Worksheets
BME Department has developed a set of Course Planning Worksheets to help students monitor their own progress and to make the discussion with advisor more productive.
Communicating with Advisors
- Email is recommended for most purposes. Please copy non-confidential messages to the BME Associate Head Prof. Conrad Zapanta, who coordinates advicing.
- To facilitate the discussion of BME academics with the advisor, students are encouraged to complete the worksheet above and send to their advisors ahead of the meeting or bring it to the meeting.
- The following professors have office hours for drop-in visits:
- Gustavo Rohde - Wed 1:00 - 2:20 PM, HH C122
- Ge Yang - Fri 12:00-1:00 PM, MI 403
- Conrad Zapanta - Wed 11:00 - 12:00, Thu 12:00 - 1:00
- Stefan Zappe - Thu 1:00 - 2:00, MI 294A
