Quick Facts about the Department of Biomedical Engineering

The Department

  • Four decades of research and education in biomedical engineering at Carnegie Mellon, initially as a non-departmental, degree granting program (see History)

  • Department established in 2002

  • Major effort in strengthening its research and education in 2008 including the recruitment of a new Department Head, continuous expansion of its faculty, enhancements of teaching facilities, and enhanced synergistic interactions with partner Departments (see History and Partners)

Faculty and Supporting Staff

  • Forty-eight faculty members, among them 17 core members who manage training programs and coordinates research activities (see Faculty)

  • Nine of the core faculty members with a 50/50% joint appointment in an engineering or science department

  • Faculty members affiliated with 13 Departments and Institutes and 7 Interdisciplinary Centers in 4 Colleges, covering a wide range of expertise from basic biological sciences to robotics (see Partners)

  • Eight full-time administrative staff members (see Administrative Staff)

Research

  • Balance between basic engineering principles and applications in biotechnology and medicine (see Research Overview)

Student Body

  • Over 200 undergraduate students taking double major in Biomedical Engineering and a traditional engineering discipline

  • Over 30 undergraduate students with a minor in Biomedical Engineering

  • Approximately 80 graduate students, 50% pursuing Ph.D. training (see Graduate Students)

Administrative, Teaching and Research Facilities

  • Office for Student Affairs located on campus, in Doherty Hall 2100

  • Administrative office temporarily located off campus, in PTC building

  • Teaching laboratories located in Smith Hall

  • Core research spaces located in PTC building, Doherty Hall, Hamerschlag Hall, and Mellon Institute

  • Total square footage approximately 24,000, 50% being used for research

  • Major portion of administrative and research operations to be relocated to a new building on campus within 5 years
