Four decades of research and education in biomedical engineering at Carnegie Mellon, initially as a non-departmental, degree granting program (see History)
Department established in 2002
Major effort in strengthening its research and education in 2008 including the recruitment of a new Department Head, continuous expansion of its faculty, enhancements of teaching facilities, and enhanced synergistic interactions with partner Departments (see History and Partners)
Forty-eight faculty members, among them 17 core members who manage training programs and coordinates research activities (see Faculty)
Nine of the core faculty members with a 50/50% joint appointment in an engineering or science department
Faculty members affiliated with 13 Departments and Institutes and 7 Interdisciplinary Centers in 4 Colleges, covering a wide range of expertise from basic biological sciences to robotics (see Partners)
Eight full-time administrative staff members (see Administrative Staff)
Balance between basic engineering principles and applications in biotechnology and medicine (see Research Overview)
Balance between research methodologies and knowledge/product development
Emphasis on synergistic interactions that cross departmental borders
